Abstract

The performance level of the employees has an important role in the success of hotel businesses. One of the most important factors that can affect the performance level is the leadership style adopted by the managers. Accordingly, the main purpose of this research is to determine the effects of autocratic and democratic leadership styles perceived by hotel managers on their performance levels. In order to achieve this aim, data were obtained by survey technique from 390 five-star hotel employees in Istanbul and selected by convenience sampling method. The data were analyzed with the structural equation model. As a result of the analysis, it has been determined that the democratic leadership perception and performance levels of the employees are high, while the autocratic leadership perception is low. However, while it was determined that democratic leadership had a positive effect on employee performance, no significant relationship was found between autocratic leadership and performance. Depending on the results of the research, academic and sectoral recommendations are presented.
