Abstract

There are many tourism products in the scope of tourism product diversification. Cultural
tourism is one of the primary products among these and also a non-replaceable tourism
product. The basic sources of motivation for tourists who participate in cultural tourism
are cultural values and cultural heritage. For this reason, the preservation and
sustainability of cultural values which are the main attraction of cultural tourism are of
great importance. Professional tourist guides are among those who are expected to make
this contribution to cultural values. Besides being cultural ambassadors of their countries,
tourist guides also have the responsibility for the cultural values they convey to tourists.
With this study which has been carried out with this point of view, it is aimed to determine
how the professional tourist guide contributes to cultural values. Questionnaires were
applied to 408 domestic and foreign tourists who visited Cappadocia region. Data
collected through survey were analyzed with statistical methods. Through these analyses,
it was aimed to evaluate how the tourist guide contributed the cultural values. In the scope
of this research, it was determined that the professional tourist guide contributed to
intercultural interaction and the preservation and promotion of cultural values as a cultural
ambassador.
