Abstract

This study aims to explore the dietary experiences of individuals living in Türkiye who follow a gluten-free diet in social settings and how these experiences are reflected in their social participation processes. The study employed a qualitative research design grounded in an interpretivist paradigm. Using purposive sampling, data were collected through online written interviews with 38 individuals who followed a gluten-free diet and had participated in social activities within the previous year. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with four participants. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Six themes emerged from the analysis: access and suitability challenges, lack of social participation and belonging, factors influencing participation decisions, personal coping strategies, psychological and emotional experiences, and expectations and recommendations. The findings indicate that difficulties in accessing reliable gluten-free options constitute an important part of participants’ experiences in social settings and that decisions to participate are largely shaped by the availability of safe food options. The study highlights the need to consider gluten-free eating not only as an individual dietary requirement but also in relation to accessibility, inclusivity, and social participation.
