Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficiency of the relationship between tourism statistics and socio-economic development in 21 metropolitan cities in Turkey (Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Aydın, Balıkesir, Bursa, Denizli, Eskişehir, Gaziantep, Istanbul, Izmir, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Konya, Manisa, Mersin, Muğla, Sakarya, Samsun, Tekirdağ and Trabzon). For this purpose, Output-Oriented Data Envelopment Analysis was conducted using one input variable (SEGE Score) and two output variables (Average Length of Stay and Occupancy Rate). The research dataset is for the year 2025 or the nearest year and was obtained from the Ministry of Industry and Technology and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The analyses were performed using the deaR package in the R project. According to the analysis results, three of the metropolitan areas (Antalya, Aydın, and Gaziantep) are efficient, while the remaining 18 metropolitan areas (Adana, Ankara, Balıkesir, Bursa, Denizli, Eskişehir, Istanbul, İzmir, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Konya, Manisa, Mersin, Muğla, Sakarya, Samsun, Tekirdağ, and Trabzon) are inefficient. Reference Sets were defined, and Improvement Suggestions were provided to help the inefficient metropolitan areas become efficient. Antalya appeared 15 times, Aydın appeared 14 times, and Gaziantep appeared 3 times in these Reference Sets. Istanbul, Ankara ve Tekirdağ were identified as the metropolitan areas most in need of improvement in terms of input and output variables. It is thought that this research will provide a quantitative perspective on the metropolitan areas within the discipline of tourism.
