Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the digital detox experience in ancient cities on place attachment. Another objective is to investigate the roles of emotional renewal and fear of missing out. Within the scope of these objectives, visits were made to three ancient cities in Turkey with students. During these visits, students' access to digital tools was completely restricted. Surveys were administered to the students after the trips. Analyses were performed using SPSS, LISREL, and PROCESS Model 1. According to the analysis results, the digital detox experience significantly and positively affects place attachment and emotional renewal. Furthermore, emotional renewal also significantly and positively affects place attachment. While emotional renewal was found to play a partial mediating role in the relationship between the digital detox experience and place attachment, fear of missing out was not found to play a moderating role. This study is important because it practically examines the effects of the digital detox experience on individuals within the context of tourism.
