Abstract

This study aims to examine the views of students enrolled in a tourism associate degree program regarding sustainable tourism within the context of the educational process carried out as part of the sustainable tourism course. The research method is qualitative, the sample is purposive sampling, and the design is liberating/developmental/critical action research. In this study, the semi-structured interview technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The data obtained were analyzed thematically using the MAXQDA 24 program, and three sub-themes were identified: “Benefit,” “Participation,” and “Awareness.” The analysis showed that the participants had no prior knowledge of the concept of sustainable tourism before taking the course. After completing the course, they associated sustainable tourism with the concepts of “protection” and “continuity.” In addition, the participants stated that they developed environmental and conservation awareness after the course, that they wanted to actively participate in sustainable tourism in the future, and that they intended to make individual efforts for the sustainable development of the region. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the sustainable tourism course contributes to the development of students’ perceptions and awareness of the sustainable tourism concept.
