Abstract

Health tourism is the concept of people traveling from one country to another for health reasons. The reasons why people travel for health tourism is that their treatment is not available in their country or has very high costs. For this reason, people on a global scale are in search of health services. For this reason, the health tourism sector is emerging as an ever-increasing expenditure area. Countries also set targets and develop policies specific to health tourism in order to get a larger share of this size, which is estimated to be around 500 billion dollars. The aim of this study is to reveal the extent to which sectoral targets have been achieved by comparing the targets set by the state in the field of health tourism in Turkey with the current realizations. In the study, the document review method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The targets set for health tourism in Turkey were determined by literature review, and the current situation was evaluated with the determined targets. In the study, the differences determined by using statistics from TURKSTAT and Ministry of Culture and Tourism were tried to be revealed by the author. As a result of the research, it was determined that the targets set within the scope of the 10th and 11th Development Plan and the Thermal Tourism Master Plan could not be reached. Suggestions were presented to policy makers on the subject in order to achieve the targets determined by the state and to develop health tourism.
